The biggest competition of the Bulgarian production this year will be from the Romanian import of lamb. Experts warn that much of the meat was imported without the necessary documents.
This was stated by the chairman of the Association of Dairy Producers in Bulgaria Dimitar Zorov. According to him, for a commission of BGN 200, the traffickers pay the customs officers to transport goods illegally in our country.
Most often, live lambs are transported, which are slaughtered in Bulgarian warehouses and then sold on our market.
This is not a taboo subject. The control body knows it. We have informed them many times. Traders know it and have been told many times that the price of Bulgarian lamb cannot be formed in this way and cannot be achieved, said the expert, quoted by Darik.
For the last 2 years, the average price of lamb has fallen by about 20%, while the costs for producers and processors are still the same.
A few years ago, lamb was sold in live weight for between BGN 5.50 and 5.80, and now it can be found at prices between BGN 4.20 and 4.50 per kilogram.
This year, a strong import of lamb is expected, which means that nearly 50% of the meat before the holiday will not be Bulgarian.
Livestock farmers say there is enough lamb to meet domestic consumption, but imports cannot be stopped. However, Bulgarian lamb is fresher, while imported lamb is often sold frozen.
