This year, the young farmer Ivan Ivanov from the town of Strumyani plucked a tomato with an unusual and rather bizarre shape, which weighs almost one kilogram.
According to some, the shape of the tomato resembles a cross, and according to others - a four-leaf clover, but in both cases people believe that the vegetable portends happiness and success.
According to Ivan Ivanov, who has been involved in vegetable production for 10 years, the unusual tomato is the result of improper pollination. It is also atypical for the tomato that it weighs almost 1 kilogram.
The Strumyani family has been making a living from agriculture for years, but for the first time they are picking such vegetables from the harvest.
The Ivanovs own a 3.5-decare greenhouse in which they grow lettuce from autumn to spring, and during the summer season - tomatoes and gherkins, which they sell to traders from Sofia, Sandanski, Dupnitsa and Kyustendil.
The farmer says that this year the sector has received minimal state subsidies, which barely cover the costs of this year's vegetable harvest.
According to Ivanov, the most capricious among vegetables is the cucumber, which requires special attention during cultivation, because it is prone to many diseases and especially Cuban mange.
In the family yard there is a greenhouse with heating, where the seedlings are grown before they are planted.
Farmers' work begins in the early hours of the morning and ends in the afternoon, when the highest quality produce is sorted to meet consumer demand.
At the beginning of this year, the Ivanovs sold a kilogram of pink tomatoes for BGN 1.40 wholesale, but intend to raise the purchase price to BGN 1.80 per kilogram at the end of the year.
Ivanov added that despite the difficulties, he was satisfied with the work in the field of agriculture. He believes that his family lives quite well by the average standards of our country.
The farmer even urges young people to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the sector, instead of looking for aimless activities.
