Black dog grapes / Solanum nigrum / is an annual herbaceous plant of the potato family / Solanaceae /, which includes well-known crops such as peppers, tobacco, tomatoes, potatoes and others.
The plant is known both at home and abroad. The Russians call it nightshade, the Germans call it Schwarzer Nachtschatten, and the French call it Morelle noire. In English-speaking countries it is known as Black nightshade. In Bulgaria it is also popular as a spoon and a berry.
Black dog grapes is a fibrous plant whose upright stem most often reaches a height of fifty to sixty meters. The species is distinguished by successive, almost ovate leaves arranged in a row. The flowers of black dog grapes are usually between four and ten.
The petals are five, painted white. The anthers are yellow. The fruit of the plant has a spherical shape. It is the size of a pea, at first greenish, but then acquires an almost black color. After ripening, the fruits are shiny, juicy, containing many seeds. Black dog grapes bloom from June to August.
The herb can be seen in weedy areas, meadows with lush vegetation. It develops successfully near settlements and in remote areas around water basins. It can be seen in different parts of Bulgaria, up to 1200 meters above sea level. Apart from Bulgaria, it is also found in other countries in Europe, North and South America, South Africa and Australia.
