Dog grapes / Solanum / is a genus of annual or perennial herbaceous plants, semi-shrubs, shrubs or small trees. This genus includes over 1700 species of crops. It also includes our well-known potatoes, peppers, tomatoes and tobacco.

Types of dog grapes
Of all the species belonging to the genus Dog Grape, the following three are the most common in Bulgaria:
Black dog grape / Solanum nigrum / is an annual herbaceous plant, up to 60-70 centimeters high. Black dog grapes is distinguished by successive green leaves. The flowers are relatively small. The petals are colored white and the anthers are yellow. The fruit is a globular strawberry, colored black.
Black dog grapes can be seen on abandoned weedy terrain, near settlements or around rivers. It is found in different parts of the country up to 1200 meters above sea level. Apart from Bulgaria, it is also noticeable in other European countries. Black dog grapes bloom in spring and bear fruit in summer.
Red dog grape / Solanum dulcamara / is a climbing shrub. The plant is also known as night shade, dog grape and periwinkle. Solanum dulcamara has a bare or almost bare stem, up to two meters. The leaves of the plant are obovate. The flowers are medium in size. The corolla is purple.
The fruit is dyed red juicy strawberry, in which are hidden many seeds. Red dog grapes are found mostly in humid areas up to a thousand meters above sea level. It blooms in June-August and bears fruit in July-October. Apart from Bulgaria, red dog grapes grow freely in other countries in Europe, Asia, Siberia and the Caucasus.
Yellow dog grape / Solanum luteum Mill / is an annual plant, between 15 and 50 centimeters high. The stem is erect or branched. The leaves are up to 3 cm long, ovate. The corolla is colored white and the anthers are yellow. The fruit is rounded, yellowish or orange.
The seeds are small, whitish. Yellow dog grapes bloom from spring to autumn. Fruits from early summer to late autumn. It can be seen in desolate places, vineyards and orchards. Apart from Bulgaria, it also grows in Southeastern Europe, the Mediterranean and the Caucasus.
Composition of dog grapes
Black and red are used for medicinal purposes dog grapes. Solanum nigrum is a source of tomatidine, glucoalkaloids, solamarin, glucosides - solacein and solanine and others. The plant Solanum dulcamara is rich in saponins, glucoalkaloids, glycosides, tannins, provitamin A, vitamin C and others.
Collecting dog grapes
The above-ground parts of black and red are used for medical purposes dog grapes. The young twigs together with the leaves are collected during the flowering of the plant - from July to September. It also works effectively for seizures, headaches and skin diseases. The plant helps with boils, psoriasis, abrasions, eczema, rashes and more. Decoctions of it are also used for itching around the anus. In the past, extracts from it have been used as a hypnotic.
Folk medicine with dog grapes
From fresh red leaves dog grapes a substance can be prepared to heal wounds and treat swelling and hemorrhoids. For this purpose, the crushed fresh leaves of the plant are soaked in olive oil (in a ratio of 1:10). So they have to stay for twenty days. The resulting mixture is used to lubricate problem skin.
Folk medicine also offers recipes with black dog grapes. One of them recommends that the ripe grains of the plant be used as a remedy for boils, rashes and purulent wounds. To mix the ointment, you will first need to crush a few ripe berries of the ticket and mix them with sunflower oil. The resulting substance can be used to impose problem areas.
Harm from dog grapes
Numerous studies to which Solanum dulcamara and Solanum nigrum have been performed show that more or less different parts of these plants can be toxic. Therefore, herbs should not be used without the knowledge of a competent person.
Improper use of one of the two plants can cause nausea, vomiting, dizziness, drowsiness. If you notice such symptoms, you should seek medical attention immediately.
Medical professionals will undertake treatment depending on the degree of poisoning. If medical attention is not sought in case of poisoning with one of the two plants, the end can be fatal.
