The hysteria with those contaminated with fipronil and eggs and egg products has reached Bulgaria as well. After it became clear that five hundred kilograms of egg yolk powder with fipronil had arrived in our country, the BFSA vowed to take the necessary actions to prevent the contamination of domestic poultry farms with the dangerous substance.

Fipronil is a toxic substance that is part of preparations for the control of ticks and fleas in livestock. In recent years, however, European Union countries have not been allowed to apply it to livestock and plants that serve as human food.

However, it has recently become clear that in a number of European countries there are eggs and egg dust contaminated with the dangerous insecticide. Among them was Bulgaria, where a five-hundred-kilogram consignment of powdered egg yolk containing the toxic substance was found. It came from Germany, NewsBg writes.

At the moment it is clear that the dangerous shipment has been delivered to a warehouse in our country. All companies to which the product was taken were also found. It was found that very small amounts of it (from 0.9 to 2.9 percent) were used to make nine tons of mayonnaise, over twenty-five tons of ice cream and ice cream cakes.

The manufacturers of the relevant products have been instructed to stop the use of the toxic product and to withdraw from the market all batches in which it is used. At this stage, almost all commercially available products suspected of containing fipronil have been withdrawn.

Meanwhile, the BFSA announced that it will start inspections of poultry farms for laying hens in Bulgaria. The actions are aimed at protecting Bulgarian eggs from contamination with fipronil, and the native consumers themselves - from health hazards.
