Her colleague Dr Usrula Ahrens of the British Association of Nutritionists added: "Apples and bananas contain fructose. It does not make a person feel full. However, when sugar is ingested, the body releases the hormone insulin. It in turn sends a signal to the brain that we have eaten enough. Fructose does not."
And he explains: "When we eat fruit, our internal stop button does not turn on, so we can eat a lot of fruit and gain weight."
