Stevia is a sugar substitute but is calorie free. It is created from the stevia plant. Stevia is popular with healthy eating enthusiasts, dieters and diabetics because it does not raise blood sugar levels. Here's how you can use it in your kitchen.
Method 1 - Use of stevia in liquid or powder form
Use clean drops of stevia. Perhaps the most popular way to use stevia is in its liquid form. A few drops of stevia can be used to replace 1-2 teaspoons of white sugar. Use stevia drops in drinks (hot or cold), sauces, salads or soups. Stevia may have a slightly bitter taste. Experiment with the number of drops to get optimal sweetness with minimal aftertaste.
Another popular way to use stevia is in its pure powder form. This advanced stevia looks like sugar and can be used wherever a powdered sweetener is commonly used. Stevia extract powder is more concentrated than sugar. The commonly used ratio is 2: 1 - sugar: stevia. Or if you used 1 cup of sugar, you will now use ½ a cup of stevia.
Stevia extract powder can be used in beverages (hot or cold) and cereals.
Stevia powder can be used to replace sugar in baking. When baking with stevia, you should use 1/2 the amount of sugar you normally use (or even less). This means that you will need to add more flour and liquid to make up for this difference.
When you are just starting out, it is best to look for stevia-based baking recipes.
Although stevia can reproduce the sweetness of sugar, it cannot be caramelized. So, keep that in mind so you don't get disappointed.
Read all labels and avoid additives. Many packs of stevia contain additional additives - such as sucrose or aspartame. These supplements are often artificial and (unlike pure stevia) can have a negative effect on your blood sugar.
Method 2 - Use fresh stevia leaves
Use stevia leaves to sweeten the tea. If you have access to a fresh stevia plant, you can use fresh stevia leaves as a sweetener. This helps you eliminate the presence of supplements and save money. To sweeten a cup of hot tea, simply take 1-4 small leaves of your plant and place them in hot water with the tea bag. Remove the leaves after a few minutes.
Although used worldwide for thousands of years, unrefined stevia leaf has not been approved as a food additive by the Food and Drug Administration. Before using stevia leaves in food or drink, it is best to consult your doctor.
