Imported cucumbers from Greece and Spain with much lower quality than the Bulgarian production are widely available on the market in our country, said Nikola Gunchev - Chairman of the Bulgarian Association of Greenhouse Producers to FOCUS News Agency.
However, imported vegetables are at much lower prices and although they are of higher quality than competing products from abroad, Bulgarian cucumbers are not as well sold. Price remains the leading factor that Bulgarian consumers comply with.
According to Gunchev, home-grown cucumbers are currently the highest quality vegetables on the market because they are the freshest. Cucumbers are harvested relatively soon, as due to bad weather in winter the vegetables appeared later.
The quality of Spanish cucumbers, which are nearing the end of the harvest, is lower. They start picking there in the fall, so those that are of lower quality on the market at the moment are most likely from there - the expert commented.
Farmers also complain about the low-quality Greek vegetables, which once again dominate the markets in our country during the spring season.
According to some Bulgarian producers, discarded tomatoes and cucumbers from Greece dominate the markets in the Pirin region and undercut the domestic production with their prices.
Vegetable growers are united around the opinion that it is necessary to take measures to limit imports from abroad, because otherwise Bulgarian producers will go bankrupt.
Because of the embargo in Russia, a lot of goods from EU countries come to us and this is a blow against us because we are not competitive. We are doomed to illegal imports - said Georgi Kaftanov, chairman of the Association Southwest 2013, adding that he and his colleagues are ready to protest.
According to him, low-quality vegetables are imported by the Roma mafia, organized in several groups. They import tomatoes and cucumbers from our southern neighbor in their personal cars.
Once imported into Bulgaria, they are offered for no more than BGN 1 per kilogram, which makes Bulgarian vegetables uncompetitive.
