Basil is a genus of herbaceous or perennial plants, depending on the species. There are about 150 species that originate from the tropics or warmer regions of the Old World.
Its name comes from the ancient Greek word basilikohn, which means "royal", as the ancient Greeks considered this herb sacred.

Sacred basil, tulsi. An annual herbaceous plant native to India and Nepal. This type of basil is used in the Ayurvedic tradition. It has both religious and cult significance in Hinduism. In India, it is grown in every home. It is very fragrant and is used as a spice in Thai cuisine.
Red basil. An annual plant with dark red to purple foliage. Suitable for deciduous ornamental plant in the herb garden, as well as a spice.
