After the last inspection of the Active Consumers Association, it became clear that the market is still selling fake butter. Experts say that there are 2 main indicators by which to recognize fake oil.

Unfortunately, only after we have bought and opened the package, we can know whether the product is real oil or not. Butter, which is made from real milk and milk fat, is harder after removing from the refrigerator - it is harder to cut and harder to spread on the slice.

With oils that contain non-dairy fats, smearing on a slice of bread becomes much easier.

Another feature that distinguishes counterfeit from real butter is the color. Often the real product is paler than the counterfeit, as manufacturers add dye to vegetable fats to make the product look like the original.

Experts also advise us to read the label carefully to be sure which brand to buy, as some manufacturers imitate the appearance of popular and quality products to sell their fake oil.

From the survey of Active Consumers it became clear that 4 of the oils on our market are not actually cow butter, as indicated on the label. The highest percentage of non-milk fat was found in the package of Profi Milk - 64%.

The other oils were 2 of the brands of the Varna company Hraninvest, which has previously offered consumers palm oil disguised as cow's milk and CBA oil, in which the unrefined fat was 10%.

The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency stated that they would review the results of the tests, after which they would punish the producers for the violations.

If this is the first violation, the company is fined between BGN 2,000 and 4,000, but if the violation is the second, the law provides for a fine of between BGN 4,000 and 6,000.

In the meantime, the accounts with misleading labels will be withdrawn from the market.

The Food Agency said inspections have already been launched at hotels and restaurants on the Black Sea coast, and the first results are expected by the end of next week.
