Scientists have created a new type of strawberry that is blue in color. The American specialists who developed the genetically modified strawberry crossed the fruit with the genes of the fish Arctic Flounder Fish. The goal was for the fruit to be able to withstand more cold. The fish in question produces a substance that scientists compare to antifreeze.

This substance allows the fish to withstand the low temperatures in the waters it inhabits. U. S. scientists have been able to isolate the gene found in fish and use it in strawberries.

The new strawberry has a bright blue color and if stored in the freezer, the quality of the fruit will not deteriorate, scientists say. At this stage, there is no mass production of the fruit, but scientists say that additional research on strawberries is already underway.

This is not the first time that scientists have tried to change the natural appearance of a fruit or vegetable - a previous experience of an Israeli farmer gave a positive result and he made a watermelon that withstood the cold.

The heart of the fruit is yellow. According to the scientist whose work was the experiment - the farmer Uri Rabin, yellow watermelon is just as tasty as our well-known red ones.

Israeli experts have done another interesting experiment, but this time with a tomato. Scientists have crossed wild and common tomatoes and obtained a new variety of vegetables. It is pure black and is called the Black Galaxy.

The company that created it claims that these tomatoes are higher in vitamin C and antioxidants. For this reason, black tomatoes are sold at much higher prices than the well-known red ones.

However, these are not the first black tomatoes - Italian scientists have introduced such in 2008, they called them "Sun Black". At this stage, these black tomatoes are not grown in Bulgaria - the reason is that they are difficult to get used to our climate.

Our scientists also create such seemingly strange vegetables - specialists from the Institute of Vegetable Crops "Maritsa" in Plovdiv have created a new type of tomato. The vegetable is striped and scientists claim that it is completely harmless.
