Despite all its advantages, as with most good things, coffee should not be overdone. Everyone knows this as a fact, but some of us still can't limit ourselves to just one, but drink a second, a third…
But before you think about it, you should know that your obsession with coffee is not based on a mental basis, but is embedded directly in your genes. This is shown by the results of a new study by scientists from the University of Edinburgh.
They found that several variations in genes determine the body's need for caffeine. According to their type of mutation, one person can be satisfied with one coffee and another with five or more.
The gene in question is called PDSS2. The deviation in it makes the body process caffeine many times faster and this makes the body need more than one glass of tonic drinks. When the gene functions normally, on the other hand, caffeine is processed more slowly and stays in the body longer, which reduces the need for coffee.
The study, which was conducted in collaboration with scientists from the University of Trieste, involved 3,000 people from the Netherlands and Italy. They had to fill in questionnaires and write how many cups of coffee they drank a day. DNA samples were then taken from all volunteers in the study to track abnormalities in their PDSS2 gene.
The researchers found that most Italians with a deviation in the gene consumed an average of three cups of coffee a day, and those without a deviation drank one cup.
The situation in the Netherlands was a little different. The inhabitants of the Low Earth with a deviation in the gene drank two cups of coffee a day, and those without - one, and most of them did not drink coffee at all.
Experts attribute this difference in the coffee culture of the two nations. Also in Italy, people drink coffee in smaller cups, while in the Netherlands, larger cups, which contain more caffeine, are revered. The results of the study were published in the journal Scientific Reports.
