Aromatic rosemary is good for our health and improves memory by between 60 and 75 percent, according to psychologists from the University of Northumbria in Newcastle.
The smell of the plant can significantly improve long-term memory, and also supports the activities of the brain that are associated with calculation, said a team of scientists led by Mark Moss.
Most tests scientists have done with the perspective memory, which is responsible for people to remember things that will happen in the future. Scientists also say that perspective memory is related to the ability to remember at a given moment what tasks we have to perform for the day, for example.
This type of memory is extremely important for our daily lives, the scientists added, because thanks to it we can call a loved one for a birthday or remember what time we should take our medicine.
Experts have conducted several studies to prove how important rosemary is for human memory. In one experiment, the researchers placed four drops of rosemary oil in front of a fan in a room, and maintained the airflow for five minutes before the study participants arrived.
The experiments involved 66 people who entered a room with a scent of rosemary and one that does not contain the essence of the herb. All people participated in the study voluntarily. The researchers gave each participant a different task to check their memory.
Volunteers received grades based on how quickly and how well they completed their task. The results show that people who have entered a room that smells of rosemary do much better with the tasks assigned to them than other people.
The blood of the participants was tested and those who were in the room with the essence had higher values of cineole in the blood plasma. This is the ingredient that has a positive effect on the processes in the brain, scientists explain.
Past studies involving rosemary have shown that the plant's volatile molecules enter the bloodstream by inhalation. These chemicals then stimulate the olfactory nerve, which affects brain processes.
It turns out that people who entered the room without fragrance remembered only four consecutive tasks, and those who were in the room with rosemary - as many as seven.
