You can often hear that external beauty is not important, it is important what is hidden inside. You will not be surprised that this old maxim applies in full force to the fruits and vegetables that we put on our table.

In many cases, people do not think at all and buy the best looking vegetables and fruits, especially citrus fruits, but this can be a fatal mistake.

It is citrus fruits that are among the most treated with various substances. Most often they are coated with various resins or pesticides are used in their cultivation.

The fruits are treated with resins and wax for excellent appearance, as well as with certain pesticides so that they do not spoil during transportation and stay in commercial warehouses.

Over time, however, some of these so-called dyes penetrate the skin of the fruit and enter its interior. However, when they are in larger quantities, this can pose a potential danger to human health.

Unfortunately, this is happening more and more often. In recent months alone, elevated levels of pesticides in oranges have been detected in two of the ten samples tested.

The good news is that the substances in question can only harm health if ingested in large quantities, experts say.

The resins and wax used to treat the peel of oranges, tangerines and other citrus fruits are considered harmless. They are registered in the E-list, usually as E 900 to E-914.

This is the time to refute the rumors that have been spreading for years that the peel of citrus fruits is additionally treated with different types of paints in order to acquire a better commercial appearance.

You should not worry about resins and wax, because according to experts they fall off when washed thoroughly.

The results of the intensified inspections of the BFSA, conducted since the beginning of the month, show that the most frequent omissions and violations of traders are mainly related to the poor base in which the food is prepared and the poor equipment.

Frequent violations have been detected in the labeling of allergens contained in food and products. There are also products that are stored without the necessary documents of origin or after their expiration date.
