Unfair traders push their customers fake cheese. The vicious practice was established during a routine inspection by inspectors from the Regional Directorate of the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency - Plovdiv.
The Plovdiv experts of the BFSA found fake cheese with irregular documents and a fake label, which was in the central warehouse of the Kaufland food chain. The inspectors' initial inspection revealed a discrepancy between the label of the cheese and its origin.
Subsequent laboratory analysis also revealed the presence of palm oil. The use of palm oil in the production of cheese and absolutely prohibited. Products that contain even 1 g of palm oil are called imitation and may not be sold under the name cheese.
The inspection found a total of 104 kg of the "cheese" in question. The product was confiscated and sent for destruction to a slaughterhouse in Varna.
The competent authorities have not yet been able to establish exactly how the counterfeit cheese ended up in Kaufland's warehouse. It is not clear who is the manufacturer of the product in question or who delivered it to the warehouses of the commercial giant.
The name of a producer from Shumen is written on the package of the fake cheese, but an inspection has established that his name has been misused and the Shumen producer has nothing to do with the seized counterfeit.
The only thing that the BFSA experts have established with certainty is that the supplier is a Sofia company. The case was also referred to the Sofia Directorate of the BFSA.
The case is also being investigated by the Economic Police, as the imitation product scandal is of a criminal nature. The case will be referred to the prosecutor's office in Plovdiv and Sofia.
The experts of the BFSA and representatives of the food chain hurried to assure the citizens of Plovdiv that the consignment of counterfeit cheese in question had not reached the trade network.
