The so-called imitation cheese-like products that the local chains offer us are definitely not the most nutritious product we can put on our table. But due to their relatively lower price, as well as for a number of other reasons, many Bulgarians are forced to buy them.
However, we can't help but wonder what is put in these products and do we even know what we eat?
Liquefied waste meat is used in the fake cheese, reveals Dr. Sergey Ivanov, a biologist at the Center for Food Biology, quoted by BlitzBg.
According to the information, the products with such a composition are priced below BGN 6.00, so we can make our own account of what kind of cheese we have bought so far.
Usually such goods are separated in a specialized stand under a label imitating a product, so we can avoid them to some extent.
But unfortunately, there is not always a guarantee for this, as some dishonest traders offer them along with other real dairy products.
In addition to waste meat, fake cheese contains condensed and powdered milk. More whitening and gelling agents can be found in it.
Some of the producers can add a little real milk as much as for color, said Sergei Ivanov.
The specialist also explained exactly how waste meat is used so that there is not a drop of doubt left among consumers. To prepare these imitation products, mechanically deboned meat is used.
Under the influence of acids it turns into a liquid hydrolyzate. After mixing the milk and the liquefied meat, they are treated with gelatin and gelling collagen to obtain the finished product commercially.
Some of the nutrients that fitness trainers consume were prepared in a similar way, but the raw materials there were different.
