Between 5 and 10% of all pesticides used in Europe are counterfeit, according to the latest data from the European Plant Protection Association.

The main markets for the distribution of counterfeit pesticides are the countries of Southern and Eastern Europe, which are also the largest producers of agricultural products on the Old Continent.

Bulgaria is also included in this number, although there is still no exact data on the annual consumption of counterfeits in our country. The producers of the low-quality preparations are mainly from China, announced by Anton Velichkov - deputy. Executive Director of the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency.

These data were presented at a press conference in response to the increasing flow of counterfeit plant protection products to Europe.

The current statistics and the possibilities for combating the threat were discussed, and the conversation was attended by representatives of the private and public sector and the organizers of the Association "Plant Protection Industry Bulgaria" (ARIB).

Plant protection products are among the most regulated products within the EU. Tests for their recognition take considerable time, which is a prerequisite for counterfeit producers to be concentrated outside the EU, mainly in Asia.

Counterfeit pesticides usually reach Europe by air or water, and in order to pass customs checks without any problems, they are declared as chemicals.

On top of that, these substances are quite often highly toxic and easily flammable, and are transported without any precautions and signs.

Dangerous pesticides enter the country in cars and vans across the borders with Turkey and Serbia. It has become clear that the use of these products is a threat not only to the farmers who use them, but also to the environment in particular.

We, as end users, are part of a vicious chain - the production of crops treated with these plant protection products reaches us all and poses a real danger to human health.
