Excessive consumption of unhealthy foods such as chips, snacks, biscuits, pastries and others poses a great danger to children's mental development, scientists from Bristol, UK have warned.

According to their large-scale studies, consuming processed foods low in useful vitamins and minerals increases the risk of adolescents not developing their mental abilities. Poor nutrition certainly affects the functioning of the brain, British scientists are adamant.

They came to these conclusions after studying the eating habits of nearly 4,000 children in several consecutive years, when they were 3, 4, 7 and 8 years old, respectively. The selected children had different eating habits, established by their parents - in the first separate group the kids were fed from little ones mainly with semi-finished products, rich in sugar and fat. The second group ate healthier meals, including meat, potatoes, and vegetables. The third group of children regularly ate healthy foods such as fish, lots of fruit and salads.

When they reached the age of 8, all children were analyzed by taking an intelligence test. The researchers also took into account factors other than nutrition, such as the mother's level of education, breastfeeding time and the social environment in which the child grew up.

Thus, the experts came to the conclusion that when children start eating unhealthy products from the age of three, there are even faint symptoms, indicating that their mental abilities develop more slowly than those of other children.

This naturally affected the results of the intelligence test. 20% of children who ate unhealthily in the first three years showed a decline in IQ.

That is why proper nutrition during the first three years is most important. During this period, children's brains develop the fastest.
