Sausages and waffles sold in our markets are record holders in terms of GMO content, because they contain the most soy, as 100% of soy in Bulgaria is imported from GMO crops from Latin America.
This is what the chairman of the Bulgarian Association of Bioproducts and the Foundation for Environment and Agriculture - Albena Simeonova, alerted, quoted by Standart.
According to her, soy products, which are used in most of the domestic production, come from Mexico and Argentina, and the soy produced in these countries is GMO.
The expert, supported by the coordinator of the Foundation for Environment and Agriculture - Borislav Sandov, claim that the newly adopted food law takes a big step backwards with the regulation of the sale of GMOs in our country.
According to the new regulation, the requirement for a large inscription on the packaging of goods containing GMOs is eliminated. The proposal was for the GMO mark on the packaging to be 25%, but it was not accepted.
The fine for traders who do not indicate GMOs in the label has also been significantly reduced. From BGN 35,000, the sanction dropped to BGN 6,000, which will allow many unfair traders to bypass the law, claims Borislav Sandov.
The Environmental Foundation says that Bulgarians should be worried when buying food from stores and because of the derogation adopted in early 2016 for limited use of neonicotinoid pesticides.
They are not used only in Smolyan, Kardzhali, Blagoevgrad, Kyustendil and Sofia, Sandov added.
From January, the European Commission will decide whether or not these pesticides will be used in the European Union. The Bioproducts Association will fight against the introduction of these substances and therefore organize meetings with European Commissioners.
