Seven people were arrested in Greece for selling large quantities of sunflower oil, which they presented as olive oil. The counterfeit olive oil was sold both in our southern neighbor and abroad, the Associated Press reports.

Charges have been filed against a family of four and three of their relatives. The detainees formed a criminal group that also engaged in other types of fraud, such as forging documents and money laundering.

The fraudsters are from the city of Larissa, Thessaly, and the fraud with olive oil took place in the area of the city.

In the workshop, police found tons of sunflower oil to which green dye was added to make it look like olive oil. 5 tons were seized fake olive oil, ready for bottling, and 12 tons packed, which was intended for export.

The product is presented as extra virgin olive oil and in Greece the 5-liter bottle is sold for between 12 and 15 euros, given that the regular price for such a quantity is about 30 euros.

Two years ago, law enforcement agencies received signals for illegal production of olive oil.

In the course of the investigation, it was established that outpatients were involved in the distribution network. 60 of them were arrested when the illegal workshop was opened.

Police believe they knew what product they were selling. The searches of several more workshops for bottling olive oil in Thessaloniki are forthcoming.

The fake olive oil was exported to countries of the European Union, and the invoices submitted were subsequently destroyed.
