Authorities in Italy have seized a criminal group that has been exporting low-quality and old olive oil to the United States for years. The olive oil brand was presented as extra virgin, Reuters reports.

Twelve people were captured, believed to be part of the Calabria mafia. the gang admitted to police that the cheap olive oil was made from olive pomace and sold in America.

The label said it was extra virgin, which is very popular because of the health benefits it is associated with. The counterfeit product was sold in the largest quantities in stores in New Jersey.

Olive-pomace oil must be at least 10 times cheaper than extra virgin olive oil, and a one-liter bottle sold for 10 euros, said David Granieri, head of the Association for the Production and Processing of Olives.

It is estimated that the Italian criminal group earned about 16 billion by fraud. In the last 2 years, they have developed their illegal activity in other agricultural industries, according to the Italian Agricultural Association Coldiretti.

In addition to counterfeiting products, the bandits also gained wealth by controlling the distribution and exploitation of labor. In 2015, they forced nearly 100,000 migrants to work for pennies in the field.
