The olive oil is one of the healthiest vegetable fats. It is increasingly preferred by Bulgarians. But is it quality?
Our nation is definitely among the happiest. We share a border with one of the largest olive oil producers in the world. But even in Greece, where even the smallest shops are full of this basic business item, the question arises as to whether the product is genuine.
Like any other mass-produced raw material, olive oil is often diluted, counterfeited or enriched with other elements. The reason is that its production is slow and requires a lot of effort. This is what makes many manufacturers compromise on quality. Some even offer seasoned sunflower or soybean oil labeled Extra Virgin.
Studies show that more than 69% of the olive oil on the market that is labeled Extra Virgin is not virgin at all. And sometimes it's not even olive oil.
Inexperienced buyers rarely find the difference. This is good for producers who, despite the low-quality product, collect a price up to five times higher than that of other vegetable fats.
In order not to be lied to anymore, you need to become connoisseurs. There are two main ways to do this. Here's how to recognize a fake from the original:
1. The first way
Pour a small amount of olive oil into a small glass. Close your throat with your palm as you shake the glass and liquid. This releases all odors from the fat without allowing them to come out. After a minute, bring the cup to your nose and remove your palm. If the olive oil is real, you will feel a sharp and peppery aroma that brings nuances of fruits and vegetables. If some of these factors are missing - you have got a fake.
2. The second way
By coughing - this is the main way to test high quality olive oil in the world. Take a sip from the same glass and leave the olive oil in your mouth for about 20 seconds. Let the liquid reach all corners of the oral cavity. Swallow. Only real olive oil causes coughing. The rule is that the more we cough, the better the product.
