Even if you read the labels of the products you buy carefully, find out which ingredients are useful or harmful, there is no guarantee that you are buying safe food and that some unwanted living organism will not pop out of the package.

Another proof of this came from the home food safety agency, which announced that dangerous canned fish liver [cod] was being withdrawn from the market.

The cans are of Polish origin, and the reason for their seizure from the commercial network is the presence of a parasite, said Dr. Ivaylo Yotov, director of the Regional Directorate of Food Safety in Lovech.

As many as 658 cans have been withdrawn from the trade network and are currently matured in the warehouse, which is located in the town of Lovech.

The actions of the agency are after a signal from the Regional Directorate for Food Safety - Burgas. After sampling and testing, the presence of a giant parasite, 1.5 - 2.5 cm in size, was found in the canned cod liver.

Immediately after that, the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency ordered the withdrawal of the available quantities of nearly 700 cans from the trade network and the importing company started a procedure for the withdrawal from the market of the entire quantity.

The case is also known to the European Food Safety Authority, as well as the manufacturer. The probability of risk to human health from the parasite is small because the fish product has undergone heat treatment, the agency explained.
