Are the appetizers left by the waiter at the table free? And her bread the water? Should we always leave bakshishafter we pay the bill?
These questions are probably faced by anyone who travels or works abroad. In Bulgaria we are used to paying for everything, but in Greece, for example, the prices on the menu include bread, sometimes water, as in France, for example. And also the service.
We offer you a brief a tour of the customs in the restaurants side by side!
Spain
In Spanish restaurants the bread it is usually paid unless you refuse it. Water served in a jug or in a glass, for which you do not pay, remains an exception. As in most countries, it is ordered in a bottle and is paid salty. On the other hand, in the daily and lunch menus, for example, bread and drinks are always included in the total price. In Spanish restaurants, the tip and its size are left to the discretion of the customer.
Portugal
Be careful with appetizers here. Some, such as olives, help you wait patiently for the main course. But even though they bring them to you without you wanting them, they are paid. Every year many tourists complain about this practice, but it is a tradition.
Italy
As in most Mediterranean countries, bread will be added separately to the bill. You have to spend between 4 and 6 euros on average for it and about 2 euros for a bottle of water, which is also not included in the price. Sometimes the so-called "coperto" (something like a fee for the tablecloth and bread) is also added to the bill. It is usually between 0.5 euros and 4 euros.
And know, you can provoke your appetite with an aperitif. The concept of its consumption is simple - ordering any drink entitles you to all kinds of appetizers, bruschettas, snacks and eggplant paste. All this is free. Just see if it says "aperativo" in front of restaurants.
Croatia
To choose the restaurant is one of the first things everyone does on vacation. That this must be the case is also being proven in Croatia. If in most restaurants in the country everything is included in the bill, this is not the case in some tourist sectors. There, restaurant owners sometimes want the bread to be paid for, for example. And know that bills in restaurants and cafes are often rounded - this is a rule you should follow. But nothing prevents you from leaving some coins when the service was good.
Morocco
The bread is included in the price as opposed to service, although there are usually exceptions in this practice as well. Here it is customary to leave bakshish, it is usually about 10-15 percent of the bill. The water is ordered in a bottle and it is good to make sure that it has been tightly closed before serving to avoid the risk of drinking it contaminated. In some restaurants, traditional Moroccan dishes require long preparation and are therefore ordered in advance.
Tunisia
Like their Moroccan neighbors, Tunisian restaurant owners include bread in the price. Here, too, it is advisable, although not obligatory, to leave a tip. The water is not served in a bottle and just like in Morocco, good restaurants recommend ordering traditional dishes in advance so that the chefs have time to prepare them properly. And keep in mind that in the south of Tunisia, the dishes are often very spicy.
England
Here you have to to leave a tip in the restaurant. Especially in restaurants where the service is not included in the bill. Sometimes restaurant owners automatically add it to the bill, but otherwise it's nice to add 10-15% of the final price. If the service is poor, you can leave a small tip, but it is important to tell your remarks to the manager.
Greece
The Greeks do not have an exact percentage of tips. But satisfied customers leave a few coins, most often 10-15 percent of the bill. The bread is paid usually around 1 euro, but this is not mandatory if you do not ask for it. On the island of Crete, the rules are the same as in Greece. The only difference is that the bread is brought to the table and can be given up, but this will deprive you of the other delicious appetizers that go with it. Goodbye tzadzik!
