Hundreds of Bulgarian farmers gathered at the Danube Bridge border crossing to protest the low purchase prices of cow's milk.

Dissatisfied with the price at which milk processors buy milk in our country, they poured some of their products on the road.

Nearly 500 people had come to the protest. According to the farmers, at the moment the cost of one liter of cow's milk is about 50-60 stotinki, but the processors buy it for only 40 cents.

Some breeders complained that there are regions in the country where the price of a liter of cow's milk is currently only about 20 cents.

They are also worried about the fact that they have received letters from dairies informing them that from next month the purchase price of milk will fall by another 10 stotinki, for which they have already referred to the Commission for Protection of Competition.

Domestic milk producers have been warning for years that milk is imported from abroad, which undercuts the prices of Bulgarian milk due to its lower cost.

The price of the domestic product is further undermined by the fact that the market is flooded with milk, which was originally intended for Russia, but due to the embargo is realized in our country.

Farmers are urging the state to increase subsidies for farmers and to check why, at such low purchase prices for milk, the price of dairy products in stores is not decreasing.

Among their demands are to make full inspections of both the milk producers and the imported milk itself.

The native breeders are adamant that if the situation in our country does not change, in the next two or three years the native farms will close one by one and then the dairy products on the shelves in the shops will be produced entirely with imported milk.

Bulgarian breeders have announced that their protests will continue until their demands are heard. They promise to meet again at the end of the month, when the protests will be supported by their Romanian counterparts.
