The fruits and vegetables that flood the home markets are either unfit or just before spoiling due to the prolonged blockade of the Bulgarian-Greek border.
The Secretary of the Bulgarian Association of Greenhouse Producers Georgi Kamburov informed about this danger.
Kamburov warned that 1-2 days ago more than 15 trucks with Greek tomatoes and cucumbers, and most likely with citrus, arrived at the stock exchange in Parvenets, where they were unloaded.
The products that stayed at the border for days due to the blockade of Greek farmers were unloaded, processed and already transported for the domestic market in our country.
But the vegetables and fruits themselves were in extremely poor condition, some of them were spoiled, the packaging was leaking, and so on.
However, after repackaging and removing the most spoiled vegetables, they still took the road to the stalls, and from there to our table.
Although unfit fruits and vegetables do not have such a good commercial appearance, many people still buy them, attracted by their lower prices.
Experts urge consumers not to trust misleading signs that the tomatoes and cucumbers offered at the markets are Bulgarian greenhouses, because at the moment there are no Bulgarian products on the market at all. Producers are adamant that they have not yet started harvesting.
Domestic producers of greenhouse products explain the lack of production with the reluctance of the Ministry of Agriculture to support them, as it supports other production sectors.
Moreover, aid to vegetable growers was reduced by 66.6 percent, effectively depriving the sector of its ability to stand on its own two feet.
The lack of quality Greek tomatoes and cucumbers is expected to be quickly offset by imports of vegetables and fruits from Turkey.
