Inspectors of the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) detected another case of illegal trade in foodstuffs.
BFSA officers caught two enterprising "domestic" producers offering milk, cheese, butter, eggs and honey directly from the trunks of their personal cars at the Krasno Selo market in the capital.
During the inspection, the infringers were not able to show any documents for the origin of the goods, for the quality of the raw materials used in the production, the technology by which they were produced.
Another serious violation that endangers the health of buyers was the storage of products in poor hygiene and inappropriate temperature.
The violators have been issued acts for establishing an administrative violation and will be fined with the maximum fine provided in the Food Act, which amounts to BGN 1,000.
The last few years have seen a boom in this type of trunk trade. Many of these merchants have regular customers and even work on pre-order.
There are many Bulgarian citizens who seek and even defend such producers, led by the misconception that home-made dairy products and eggs are healthier.
Experts from the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency advise citizens to refrain from buying goods for which they have no information about what raw materials and in what conditions they are produced.
The truth is that many of these products are made from milk from animals that are not known whether they are healthy or not, dewormed and vaccinated.
Often the production process itself is carried out literally on the kitchen table, under unhygienic conditions. The next time you decide to buy homemade yellow cheese from the trunk of a car, ask yourself: Is it worth risking your health? “
