Italians have forgotten about the Mediterranean diet and are among the most obese nations in all of Europe. According to the latest data, today less than half of Italians eat according to the traditional regime for this latitude. The rest rely on junk food, following the example of the Americans.

For millennia, Italians have eaten mainly Mediterranean food - fish, vegetables, fruits and olive oil. This diet is considered one of the healthiest ever. Diseases such as cancer, diabetes and all kinds of cardiovascular disease are rare in people who rely on this regimen.

In recent years, however, there has been a very strange trend in Italy. It turns out that more than half of Italians have radically changed their habits and increasingly rely on processed foods high in fat and sugar, red meat, burgers and in general - semi-finished and fast food.

The trend is most noticeable among young people. In the age group between 15 and 24, only a third rely on tradition and adhere to the Mediterranean diet. A comprehensive look at the situation in the country shows that the eating habits of Italians are getting closer to those of Americans.

The picture is quite scary. According to the latest data, overweight children in the country are the largest of any other continental part of Europe in general. Over 37% of children under the age of 8 are obese due to unhealthy eating.

In addition, life expectancy is reduced by about 7 years for weight problems. If no action is taken, Italians may soon forget about the Mediterranean type of diet. This will adversely affect their health, as well as the appearance and psychological state of the nation.
