Oranges of 50 stotinki per kilogram are offered by our traders in violation of European rules for the sale of fruit, informs the Press newspaper.

Painted oranges, in addition to their low price, can be recognized by their unusual size and different color.

The fruits do not have any documents certifying their quality, which is why they are so cheap.

In principle, such oranges should be redirected for processing, according to European standards. In our country, however, traders offer them for direct consumption.

It is assumed that the oranges were harvested in North Africa, and they entered our markets by being imported through Greece. The fruits are picked while they are still green, and in Bulgaria they are ripe at a temperature of 28 degrees.

The orange peel is then painted to give it a tempting commercial look, the paint is dried, and finally the fruit is varnished and sent for sale. This process has so far only been applied to bananas.

Such a practice with fruits is not prohibited by law, says Eduard Stoychev - chairman of the State Commission on Commodity Exchanges and Markets. Stoychev himself even says that he recently bought grapefruits that were painted.

However, the presence of dyed fruits in our markets does not mean that Bulgarians consume only such citrus fruits. Everyone can buy ripe and quality oranges, but their prices are higher.

Although the dyes used for this procedure are harmless, it is not recommended to use their bark.

If I receive a signal where exactly the manipulation is performed, I will immediately send an inspection - said the head of the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency, Professor Plamen Mollov.

Mollov added that if the processing of oranges is done with permitted materials, there is no problem to sell them.

Some apples also undergo a similar procedure, as they are immersed in special liquids with oleic ingredients so that they do not overripe quickly, which makes them greasy to the touch. These ingredients are not poisonous and do not endanger human health.

However, the problem remains for consumers that they cannot distinguish the colored fruits, as they do not have a label to indicate the presence of dyes.
