Yamun is an unknown evergreen tropical tree / fruit /, belonging to the family Myrtaceae. It originates from India, where it is used in making many desserts and delicacies. However, Indian cuisine is known for the use of spices and their unique combination in a variety of recipes.
This plant is often grown for decorative purposes because its greenery is dense and provides suitable shade during the warm days of summer. It was used in ancient times as a medical remedy for a number of diseases. In most parts of Asia, it is sown near Hindu temples, as it is considered a divine plant - sacred to Krishna.
Its fruits develop in summer and are similar to the olive tree. They have an ovoid shape, being green at the beginning and turning black when ripe. They taste mostly sweet and when consumed they turn the tongue purple.
Yamuna fruits are used in India to make their most famous pastry - gulab jamun.
This plant is distributed in India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines. It was brought to the United States and Brazil by Portuguese colonizers as far back as 1900.
The plant is rich in proteins, minerals and vitamins. Contains protein, tannins, starch, fatty acids, crude fiber and more.
The fruits, in turn, are rich in glucose, petunidine, raffinose, fructose, citric, malic and gallic acid, anthocyanins, delphinidin-3-gentiobioside, malvidin-3-laminaribioside, petunidine-3-gentiobioside, cyanidin and cyanidine dianidide.
Yamun has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, diuretic, neuropsychotic, antidiarrheal, antimicrobial and a host of other properties.
