A new national protest is being prepared by the producers of homemade brandy in the country. They will take to the streets if the introduced changes in the Law on Excise Duties and Tax Warehouses are not dropped, NovaTV informs.

A meeting between the producers and Prime Minister Boyko Borissov was held today. It was also attended by Finance Minister Vladislav Goranov and Budget Committee Chairwoman Menda Stoyanova

The producers of homemade brandy directly asked the Prime Minister for help. They want the excise duties on their products, introduced since the beginning of this year, to be abolished.

The new rules stipulate that small distilleries be considered with the status of brandy pots with a total capacity of up to 500 liters, and not up to 1000, as was the case so far. Before the changes were voted on, parliament also changed the small business tax. Until last year, the one for small sites was BGN 550 per hectolitre of pure alcohol, and for the rest - BGN 1,100.

Even before the legal amendments were adopted, there were protests across the country by both brandy producers and consumers. However, this did not stop the deputies and they voted in favor.

The changes and restrictions were proposed and adopted in order to stop the illegal sale of home-made distillates. However, they also affect honest producers, they complain.

No consensus was reached at today's meeting. The producers still hope that the deputies will return the law to its old form. If not, apart from a national protest, the ruling party is also threatening them with a lawsuit. Maya Manolova is determined to file her first case from her new position as ombudsman against the new excise duties.
