Brussels has announced that it will compensate milk producers who have suffered from the Russian embargo and are unable to export their products to Russia, as a result of which they are suffering losses.

The European Union's press office said it would compensate all producers in the Union for imposing an embargo on certain EU foods.

Vladimir Putin's reaction was provoked by new sanctions from Europe and the United States.

The European Commission has already allocated 125m euros to compensate fruit and vegetable producers.

The reserve of EUR 420 million in Brussels may not be enough, as Finland alone estimates its embargo losses at half that amount.

A consultation between EU agriculture ministers will take place on 5 September. The measures that need to be taken will then be discussed.

Meanwhile, a study of the domestic markets of the marketing company Nielsen Bulgaria shows that milk sales fell by 2.8% in the first six months of 2014.

In recent months, 109 million kilograms of yogurt have been sold in the country for the amount of BGN 248 million. For the same period last year, sales were 112 million kilograms for 245 million levs.

The market leader this year is cow's milk, which is preferred by 82% of Bulgarian consumers. The sheep ranks second in sales, and the buffalo is third.

For the last two years there has been an increase in the price of retail yoghurts. In supermarkets, they jumped by an average of 18 cents per kilogram, which is currently their highest market value. The jump in wholesale prices is 10 stotinki per kilogram of yogurt.

The average price per liter of fresh milk has risen by 11 stotinki.
