The government of one of the leading countries in banana exports - Costa Rica, announced that the situation of banana plantations in them is in crisis, which means that the delicious fruit is in danger of extinction.

Experts also note that the export industry of one of the leading exporters of bananas is also affected by pests and fungal diseases on crops.

Insect populations have increased over the past year due to global warming, and Costa Rica's banana industry, which brings the state nearly half a billion dollars, has been attacked by two separate pests.

The parasites make the plants weaker and damage the fruit, as a result of which whole bunches of bananas are thrown away.

According to Magda Gonzalez, executive director of the Costa Rican Ministry of Agriculture's State Phytosanitary Control, climate change in recent years has led to threatening fruit defects.

At the same time, a disease caused by the fungus Fusarium affects a key variety of bananas for export to Mozambique and Jordan.

One of the largest banana plantations in Costa Rica is Del Mondo near Puerto Limon.

Each tree there gives 3 harvests a year, and bananas are harvested every 120 days.

The fruits are wrapped in blue nylon to protect them from pests. The bananas are cut with a machete and hung on hooks, periodically watered with a stream of cold water.

Within 14 days of being cut, the bananas are fully ripe and ready for sale.

After bearing fruit, the tree is cut down, and in its place a new tree grows from the same root.

The most interesting for a person from other latitudes is the blossoming banana color - burgundy and with large leaves, and at its base with the size of carafe can be seen future fruits.

An interesting harvest are the red bananas, which are softer and sweeter than the yellow varieties, with a slight raspberry aroma.

The main producers of red bananas are Asia, Central and South America.
