In 2017, Bulgarians ate 25 tons of chocolate, which makes an average of 3.5 kg per person. This is shown by the data from the production survey and consumption of chocolateconducted by Eurostat.
While every day a Bulgarian eats between 20 and 50 grams of chocolate, the daily consumption of Europeans is on average between 30 and 90 grams. This means that in one year every European eats approximately 10 kg chocolate, which is almost 3 times higher than the average level in Bulgaria.
In Bulgaria, the chocolate market amounts to nearly BGN 350 million per year. The biggest lovers of the sweet temptation are the ladies between the ages of 20 and 40, and every fifth consumer of chocolate lives in Sofia.
On the market, Bulgarians are mainly looking for 5-6 brands of chocolate, which are in the middle price range and are produced by 2-3 international companies.
Experts are of the opinion that the weak production of chocolate in our country by small private companies is limited due to two reasons: the low consumption of the product in our country and the shortage of raw cocoa needed for its production.
In 2017, the European Union produced nearly 4 million tons of chocolate, worth 18.3 billion euros. The leader in the production of sweet temptation is Germany with 1.3 million tons of chocolate produced or 32% of the total amount for the Union. In second place is Italy with 0.7 million tons, followed by France and the Netherlands, each with 0.4 million tons.
The survey data are for direct only consumption of chocolate, they do not include the production of the product, which is used for industrial purposes.
