Eighty-five percent of Bulgarians want to buy sustainable fish and seafood, according to a representative WWF survey of 7,500 people from 11 countries.

Sustainable fish and seafood are only those products whose catch has not affected the marine ecosystem so that it can recover.

500 Bulgarians took part in the WWF poll. Of these, 85% agree that only sustainable fish should be offered in Bulgaria, 12% have no opinion, and 3% do not agree to comply with the marine ecosystem.

According to the same survey, however, only 29 percent of Bulgarians say it is easy for them to know if a product is sustainable or not. 46% of people do not know how to determine this. 66% of our compatriots indicate that they do not know where they can buy sustainable fish products.

The WWF is adamant that if we do not stop buying unsustainably caught fish, the marine ecosystem will be destroyed and eventually one day seafood will run out.

Most European countries are adamant on this issue. In the survey, most people support sustainable fish in the market. In Austria, the sale of only sustainable fish is supported by 80% of respondents, in Italy - 81%, in Greece - 77%, in Portugal - 72%, in Croatia - 74%, in Slovenia - 75%, in Romania - 82%, and in France - 76%.

Bulgarians say that when looking for fish for their table, they stick to fresh produce. The second factor in the consumption of fish in our country is its price, and in third place is the species.

39% of our people avoid fish products that use chemicals, and 33% of them always check the origin of the fish.

From this year WWF Bulgaria, together with 10 other European offices of the organization begins work on making recommendations to consumers on how to choose sustainable fish and seafood.
