The Council of Europe's Health Commission has recently launched a guide on the amount of food parents should give their children. The purpose of the leaflet was to encourage adults to reduce the portions they give to their heirs.

These measures came after leading European nutritionists warned in an open petition that nearly 69% of European preschoolers were at risk of obesity. This percentage is higher than all similar data released so far. A survey of 10,000 parents from the Old Continent found that 80 percent of them give their children portions of food that are far greater than the scientists' recommendations.

In the published sheet you can read what are the dangers of child nutrition, what is the best food for its development and the exact food measures that should contain the children's portion at each meal of the day.

The guide says that no more than five tablespoons of pasta, five tablespoons of rice or four tablespoons of mashed potatoes should be served for dinner to a child between the ages of one and four. There is also a warning that young children should not be given too many raisins and cornflakes during the day due to the high sugar content.

Nutritionists also advise that sweets and chocolate should be strictly consumed only once a week or on a specific occasion. Treats should not be an everyday food, but something special. This will have not only a healthy but also an educational effect.

The leaflet recommends avoiding processed meats such as ham, dry sausages, minced meat. Meat is allowed two to three times a week. Eating fish and eggs is encouraged within reasonable limits.

The study also found that 36% of parents deliberately give unhealthy food to their child as a bribe to keep it peaceful, and only 25% are worried about whether young children will have problems with obesity in the future.

73 percent of parents said they were worried that their children were not eating enough, while 71 percent admitted that they regularly offered their child more chips than recommended.
