Over 100 kilograms of suspicious chicken meat together with various sauces were seized by the inspectors of the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency during the last inspections.

Experts say the suspicious chicken was found only in the first week of inspections. Within a week, inspectors from the Agency stopped selling more than 100 kilograms of chicken meat from various outlets across the country.

Recent BFSA reports indicate that irregularities in the sale of hamburgers and sandwiches are widespread. So far, 173 prescriptions and 46 acts of traders have been drawn up.

Due to unacceptably poor hygiene, 7 sites were closed.

Both the butchers and the sandwich and katmi pavilions on the Black Sea coast have been subjected to intensified inspections.

Although experts say there are no startling violations, inspectors have come across suspicious food items as well as improperly stored goods. Due to the lack of refrigerated display cases, 35 kilograms of sauces - ketchup, mayonnaise and mustard - were confiscated.

In one week, 88 kilograms of cuts of chicken meat were seized without the necessary documents required to sell the meat. Most of the suspicious chicken did not even have labels.

Inspections by the Food Safety Agency are also underway in Pernik, where inspectors are monitoring whether traders offer napkins to customers who buy ice cream in a waffle cone.

In Pernik restaurants, hygiene is also monitored when selling doner kebabs, sandwiches and pizzas. Inspectors also pay attention to the storage of sauces, as recent inspections show that mayonnaise mixtures are not kept in refrigerated display cases, which violates the rules for storing sauces.

The BFSA added that 12 people have joined the Agency, who cooperate in the opening of sites that do not comply with the norms for the sale and storage of food.

Violation reports can also be submitted by volunteers.
