Food in Bulgaria is many times more expensive than in Europe. At the same time they offer poorer quality.
The examples of differences in food quality and prices in Bulgaria and Europe are shocking. For example, a child's juice is 147% more expensive in the same retail chain in Sofia than in Berlin.
The most serious deviations are observed in baby food and beverages of the same brands. Apart from the prices, there are also differences in quality, as the reduction is always at the expense of the Bulgarian consumer.
Inspections have found that children's chocolates, fruit and carbonated beverages contain many ingredients that have been replaced by lower quality ones. Bulgaria reacted by signing a declaration demanding the European Union uniform food standards in Western and Eastern Europe. Ombudsman Maya Manolova is adamant that this is not only discrimination but also an insult to Bulgarian citizens and undermines the idea of the EU.
The difference in products definitely hurts consumers in Eastern Europe. This proves once again that the double standard of food, in the context of what is offered to them on the Western, Eastern and Western European markets, must be regulated in a regulation. It must clearly oblige the use of the same ingredients for a product, regardless of the country for which it is intended.
