Average food prices in our markets are increasingly approaching the average values of food in Western Europe. This was stated by Violeta Ivanova from CITUB to Nova TV.
Some products, such as vegetable oils, are even more expensive than those in European markets. Most foods are already experiencing a slow but steady rise in prices.
Average food prices have reached 71% of European average levels. The most significant is the increase in milk and dairy products, with values of about 90% to European prices.
The rise in food prices has become a trend in recent years, but wages are not going up at the same rate, added Stoyan Panchev of the Expert Club for Economics and Politics.
While food prices in Bulgaria are close to 71% of European prices, wages are 5 times lower than in France and 7 times lower than in Germany.
The Confederation of Independent Trade Unions of Bulgaria estimates that a person will need BGN 581.31 per month for a normal life, and BGN 2,325 per month for the maintenance of a family of four.
The money is needed to meet the basic needs of food, housing, health, education, transport and recreation according to the average Bulgarian standards.
For Sofia, however, the required monthly income must be higher. A person will need at least BGN 1,500 to live normally in the capital.
