An American from Minnesota grew the largest tomato in the world. Dan McCoy's creation reached a record 3.8 kilograms or 8.41 feet, UPI reports. The farmer hopes his achievement will be noted soon in the Guinness Book of Records.
So far, the record for the largest tomato was held by Gordon Gramot, Oklahoma in the United States. His tomato was grown in 1986 and weighed 3.5 kilograms (7.75 feet).
Dan called his pride the Great Zack. The control weighing of the remarkable tomato was carried out in the presence of representatives of the Great Pumpkin Commonwealth, which every year organizes competitions between the farmers who have grown the largest fruits and vegetables.
The tomato was sown indoors on April 15 and planted in a greenhouse in May. Big Zack is fertilized with dehydrated chicken manure, humic acids, brown seaweed and three times with a special fertilizer high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. To raise his eldest son, Dan McCoy had to use his wife's tights.
However, the little sacrifice was worth it and the results were not late. The farmer is extremely proud of his creation and promises to distribute some of the seeds to other producers. He intends to sell the rest at a charity auction as part of the annual Big Pumpkin Society festival, which will take place early next year.
However, the United States is not the only country that can boast of giant tomatoes. A tomato weighing 2.12 kilograms was grown in Bulgaria two summers ago. The vegetable was cut from the garden of Stayko Stoykov from the Gorno Ezero district of Burgas. Staiko grows all kinds of fruits and vegetables and has always enjoyed an enviable harvest. But this tomato exceeds even his wildest dreams.
The owner manages to cut it only with pruning shears, as its handle turns out to be too thick and strong. Staiko himself believes that the giant vegetable is a gift from God. The seeds for the impressive tomato were given to him fifteen years ago by a woman who received them from an Athos monk.
