An ordinance comes into force on June 24, obliging producers to write on the label of honey the country of origin of the product. The aim is to make consumers more informed when shopping.
The chairman of the Union of Beekeepers in Bulgaria, Mihail Mihailov, is pleased with the new law, because according to him, this protects the interests of the Bulgarian producer and the customer.
Most people in the country prefer Bulgarian honey to imported honey, as it is much better and more useful than Chinese and Argentine products, which in recent years have flooded our market.
Bulgarian honey is one of the best-selling products in the European Union, Mihailov told BNR.
So I think we will find a market and finally write that the highest quality honey is produced in Bulgaria, and not to use it as an improver, without specifying where it came from - says the chairman of the Union of Beekeepers.
According to the regulation, if the honey was produced in several countries, the label must state a mixture of types of honey originating outside the EU, a mixture of types of honey originating in the EU or a mixture of types of honey originating in the EU and abroad.
The ordinance also states that pollen, as a constituent characteristic of honey, will not be considered an ingredient that must be indicated on the contents of the label.
The new rules have been in force since June 24, 2015, but honey that has already been placed on the market before that date can still be sold with the old labels, which do not indicate its origin.
This year, excellent honey yields are expected in our country, said beekeepers from Kyustendil and Varna. Bee colonies have managed to develop, and according to forecasts, the weather conditions this summer will be much more favorable.
A rich harvest should not increase the price of honey, as a possible increase will significantly reduce sales. At the moment the price per kilogram of honey is 10 leva.
