In preparation for the biggest spring holiday - Easter, the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency begins the traditional food safety inspection.
What checks are made on food?
Mostly the foods that must be present at the feast table are checked - lamb, eggs and Easter cakes. From BFSA they say a New Zealand lamb has been put on the market. There is also a new requirement for lamb. It must have a blue stamp if it is made in Bulgaria and a red stamp if it is grown in another country but slaughtered in Bulgaria.
The Easter cake is checked to see if all the components in it are correctly listed. Eggs must have information about the producer, otherwise all the rules for their safety are the same as before. The agency advises people to look carefully at the labels.
While preparing for the holiday, the traditional food - vegetables are beginning to become exotic for our table, as prices are cosmic. A kilo of peppers is available on the market at a price of BGN 10. A kilo of fresh potatoes, zucchini and eggplant costs as much as a kilo of meat. And economists say the rise in prices corresponds to the rise in incomes.
What are the expectations?
Inflation is expected to slow. The global trend is the growth of foodstuffs to decrease and the expectations are that this will affect the Bulgarian market as well.
The competition on the world markets is huge and this inevitably leads to sharp movements in prices both up and down. The trends are towards decreasing prices, not increasing.
High prices of vegetables are due to the fact that during this period of the year there is no Bulgarian production, all products are imported. The countries from which vegetables are imported in our country have been affected by floods and prices have risen. This explains the price of BGN 10 per kilogram of peppers.
The supervisory authorities that monitor the market believe that it is well balanced and expect normal trading practice. Consumers are looking for Bulgarian products, but still buy the cheapest.
The state commission makes the same wish to the consumers - to give their preferences to the domestic production in order to stimulate it.
