Organic foods are becoming more popular and sought after by consumers, although they have slightly higher prices than other foods. It is because of their high demand that the organic food market is growing more and more.
This was announced by the President of the Bulgarian Association of Organic Products Blagovesta Vasileva. Among the real organic products that we can buy, there are many fakes that only mislead their consumers with labels such as eco, organic, organic, etc.
One of the main reasons for the market to be full of products that are claimed to be organic, but they are in fact fakes, is the change in three laws, one of which is the law on food, explains Dr. Stoilko Apostolov. He is the manager of the Bioselena Foundation for Organic Agriculture.
Prior to these changes, the requirement was that bio, eco and organic labels could only be labeled on goods produced by certified organic companies. Unfortunately, however, these requirements remained only for goods labeled organic.
This means that each manufacturer can write on their labels that they are eco, organic or natural products, explains Dr. Apostolov. The industry is worried about these changes and insists that the problem be solved in order to stop the production and sale of counterfeits and not to mislead consumers.
This is not the only problem with these products - manufacturers say that there is no real information about the market for these products. Dr. Apostolov explains that only what is produced is monitored, but not how much and what is sold.
He thinks it is a good idea for the National Statistical Institute to collect information on the biostock market. Blagovesta Vasileva claims that in Bulgaria there is no slaughterhouse for organic products that is certified for this activity, and there is only one organic farm that has a certificate for beef cattle breeding.
Because of this, there is no organic meat that is domestically produced - the animals can only be exported alive.
