Five people who were experienced mushroom pickers died of poisoning. There is a real boom from mushroom poisoning in Plovdiv, where 14 people with symptoms of poisoning have been admitted so far.
One death for the country is in Stara Zagora and the other in Smolyan. Three more died in Haskovo, Velingrad and Plovdiv. The victims were mushroom pickers with many years of experience and so far had no problems recognizing the poisonous species.
Since the beginning of October, 14 people with mushroom poisoning have been admitted to the toxicology clinic of the Plovdiv University Hospital. Many of them are experienced mushroom pickers with more than 10 years of experience.
Three of the patients were in critical condition after eating a green, white or sticky white fly agaric. Among the victims are 4 children and 8 Syrians.
The poisoned say they picked mushrooms from the field and then cooked them to a pulp. People who have sought medical help in time are now recovering.
At the moment, people collect mushrooms en masse without knowing them well. Apart from the fact that the therapy is expensive, it does not guarantee, especially in the cases of the so-called phalloid fly agaric poisoning - said Professor Yanko Ilieva from Plovdiv Toxicology.
As the treatment is very expensive, experts advise not to pick mushrooms yourself and buy them only from people who we are sure have successfully recognized the poisonous species.
One liter of blood purification costs BGN 1,100, and the entire treatment can cost between BGN 5,000 and 6,000.
