March 5 is the perfect time to talk about what a drink is green alcoholbecause today is celebrated the day of absinthe.

What the hell is so absurd about him? An important ingredient in the drink is the substance monoterpine, also known as thujone. It is a neuro-paralytic poison. It is contained in bitter wormwood, which is the main component of absinthe. Exactly the wormwood gives the name of the devil's drink - in Latin wormwood is Artemisia absintum.

Absinthe is a decoction of the herb mixed with 70-90-degree alcohol and other medicinal herbs such as lemon balm, dill, anise, which are added for flavor. Ready to eat, the drink is devilishly bitter and can be in several colors - yellow, brown, red, but most often emerald green.

Dr. Pierre Ordiner is considered to be the discoverer of the absinthe recipe. First, the drink was used to treat all kinds of diseases - malaria, dysentery… In 1797, a relative of Dr. Ordiner opened the first factory for the production of absinthe in Switzerland.

Thujone is an alkaloid with psychotropic action. It is believed that its constant consumption, and in very small quantities, leads to gradual addiction, accompanied by impaired kidney function, indigestion, insanity. Overdosing can even lead to convulsions and loss of consciousness.

Today, the content of thujone in absinthe is strictly controlled. The amount should not exceed 10 milligrams per liter. Globally, the largest producers are Germany, the Czech Republic, Spain, Switzerland and France.

When serving absinthe the strict rule is followed - in a spoon with a special design put a lump of sugar and place over the cup of absinthe. Cold water is added on top.

If the taste of your absinthe is strong anyway, you can always add it as part of various cocktails. Experiment, but don't forget everything you read above
