Nero the Devil / Nero d'Avola / is a red wine grape variety grown in Sicily, Italy. In fact, they believe that this is the most important variety in these lands. Initially, it was grown only within Syracuse, but later spread throughout the island. Today it occupies about 12,000 hectares of land.
Nero the Devil occurs under other names. The variety is also known as Struguri De Calabria, Calabrese D'Avola, Raisin De Calabre Noir, Calabrese Pizzuto, Calabriai Fekete, Calabrese Di Noto and others.
Nero the Devil features a light green, five-part, broad leaf, equipped with triangular teeth. The clusters are medium-sized, cone-shaped, not too compact. The berries are medium to large, rounded or slightly flattened, colored dark purple to blue. They are equipped with an elastic smooth shell, under which there is tender juicy meat with a pleasant taste.
It is used to make rich, fragrant and drinkable red wines, which become even more pleasing to the palate after aging for some time. The variety is also suitable for blending, and the final results are more than impressive.
The vines of this variety grow most favorably in the Mediterranean climate of the island of Sicily. They are characterized by regular production. They need pruning. On the other hand, the variety is not particularly susceptible to fungal diseases.
The story of Nero the Devil
As we have already established, this grape variety is typically Sicilian. It is believed that it was introduced by the Phoenicians, although studies in the area of Mount Etna show that these vines were known to the population before. After the ancient Greeks began to cultivate Nero the Devil, their endeavor was continued by the Romans.
The vines are named after the city of Avola, located in the southern part of the island of Sicily. Initially, they grew mainly in this area, but then became very popular among the locals. With its favorable climate, Sicily becomes the perfect place for making selected wines.
At the end of the last century, winemakers decided to choose the most suitable place on the island, thanks to which they could get the highest quality wine possible. So they stop at a corner between Trapani and Agrigento.
Characteristic of Nero the Devil
Wines produced from Nero D’Avola are characterized by a deep ruby-red color. Looking at the wine, however, you can't help but notice the magnetic purple hues. The aroma of the drink is complex, reminiscent of violets, violets, cloves, blackberries, cherries, raspberries, blackcurrants, chocolate. This whole bouquet of aromas is perfected with the aroma of an oak barrel, which is felt very lightly and gently.
The wines of this grape variety are characterized by a medium dense body and velvety structure. They are powerful, harmonious and warm. They are also characterized by a high sugar content. The alcohol content in most cases is over 15 percent.
Serving to Nero the Devil
With its velvety charm the wines of Nero the Devil can turn the most ordinary evening into a real holiday. However, to reveal its irreparable charm, the drink must be slightly chilled. Experts usually recommend that consumers stick to a temperature of 16-18 degrees. However, do not forget that these values depend mainly on the age of the wine, so before serving the wine, be sure to find out from its label what is its serving temperature.
