An owner of a Japanese sushi restaurant chain bought the most expensive product since starting his business. The Japanese paid $ 632,000 for a 212-kilogram tuna.

The food sold for 74.2 million Japanese yen, equivalent to approximately $ 632,000.

The 212-kilogram red tuna was sold at auction in Tokyo at the Tsukiji fish market, Bloomberg reports. And since it is traditional for making sushi, the owner of the chain decided to pay the requested amount.

Kiyoshi Kimura often wins such auctions, and the fish caught off the coast of Aomori Prefecture in northern Japan are just some of the extremely expensive products he has acquired in recent years.

The price of this tuna is only second in the ranking of the most expensive products that the fish market in Tokyo has seen. The most expensive tuna sold in 2013, when the buyer parted ways with 155.4 million yen.

Last year's auction was to be the last at its current location in Tsukiji, with the auction scheduled to take place in another market in Japan this year.

But the reported pollution in Tokyo Bay necessitated a change in plans. The results of the research showed heavy soil contamination near a former gas plant, so the auction of the huge tuna was held at the usual location.
