Horseradish is a spicy mustard-flavored spice. It becomes a snack as it stimulates the appetite. Horseradish contains 16% carbohydrates, 3% nitrogen and little fat. It is useful because it contains many minerals, salts and vitamins, including: potassium, calcium, iron, vitamin C (more than lemons), vitamin A and B vitamins.
Horseradish is widely used in folk medicine and in the manufacture of sauerkraut.
Growing horseradish in the personal garden is desirable. For this purpose, cuttings 1.5-2 cm thick are used, which are prepared in the fall. They are cut horizontally at the top and obliquely at the bottom. Store in moist sand in a cool place.
They are planted in late winter or early spring - exactly the end of February, early March. Planting is done in furrows that are at a distance of 50-60 cm from each other.
The lateral buds of the cuttings are removed by using a coarse woolen cloth. The cuttings are rubbed with it and so the buds fall. Leave the buds at the top and bottom. The cuttings are planted at a distance of 10 cm from each other and 4 cm below the soil surface.
During the growing season they are fed with 1.5-2 kg of ammonium nitrate, 2-3 kg of superphosphate, 1.5-2 kg of potassium sulfate per 100 sq. M.
In July-August the rhizomes are opened to their base and the lateral roots and vegetative buds are removed with the help of woolen cloth. After this procedure, they are buried again.
They are harvested in autumn, when the root has reached a thickness of 3 cm. The horseradish is removed with a straight shovel. The lateral roots are cleaned in the familiar way. Cleaned horseradish is stored in bundles.
