The oil on the domestic market is a mass mixture of lard, water and technological additives, revealed an investigation by the Bulgarian Association of Active Consumers.

The association has researched 15 of the most popular butter brands on the market, and the results have clearly shown that producers violate the law by adding non-dairy ingredients to the dairy product.

In the study, the products were tested for the presence of non-dairy fats, water content, other fats and dry non-fat residue.

Tests on butter on domestic markets were carried out by two independent laboratories using the test methods set out in Regulation 273/2008 of the European Commission and the Codex standard for butter.

The Active Consumers Association warns that butter producers are massively violating three of the legal provisions that are mandatory for the production of dairy products.

Unregulated milk fat substitutes have been found in the butter. This was found in four of the tested samples. The most commonly used substitutes are solid vegetable oils such as palm oil.

In some samples, the percentage of non-milk fat reaches a shocking 75%. In the other samples, where this violation was found, it varies between 10 and 50%.

Hydrogenated waste fats and lard were found in some of the samples, which clearly violates the regulation for oil production.

However, none of the producers indicated the ingredients used on the product labels, which is the third most common infringement in dairy products.

According to the Bulgarian legislation, the products with added non-milk fats must be marked as imitation, and the type and percentage of the substitute are written on their packaging.”- says Bogomil Nikolov, who is the executive director of Active Consumers.

Much more water is registered in the native cow than the one announced. The water content in five of the brands tested was 25% of the total content.

According to the requirements, the water in the butter must not exceed 16%.
