Heavy rains this week are about to ruin the grape harvest, with local growers saying they don't know how to make up for their huge losses this year.
Farmers from the Sandanski region say their plantations have been scorched by the rains, and much of the crop has begun to mold.
About 50% of the plantations have already been affected, and growers say they are no longer working because of the numerous raids by thieves.
Moisture and alternating rain and sun over the past few months have severely affected the country's vineyards, and growers say they do not know how to protect their crops.
The leaves are already moldy and blackened and it is expected that this year's grape harvest will be quite poor.
"Our work is gone, I'm crying when I look at the damage," said a producer from southwestern Bulgaria.
His colleagues from all over the country say that one of the most serious diseases on grapes - manna, has attacked the plantations, destroying a large part of the harvest.
Rain-damaged vines will bear less fruit this year, as flowering is destroyed in its infancy.
The plantations have been suffering since the spring, after they froze due to the unusually low temperatures in April and May.
Last year, most of the production failed to sell, and this year the grapes are expected to be harvested earlier than usual.
Many winegrowers in the Sandanski region announced days ago that they have not yet received their money from the grapes sold last autumn.
"We will wait another month at most and revolt. It is not normal that they cannot give us the money for 8 months. And we have to cover the costs of the new harvest. We rely only on the vineyards to survive, "said producers from the Sandanski village of Vranya.
Native growers say that last year the price of grapes dropped significantly, leaving tens of tons of fruit unsold.
The purchase price of the grapes is expected to remain low this year as well, which is why many producers refuse to cultivate their vineyards.
